LEAGUE CITY – Clear Lake downed Alvin 38-21 in a ground war game Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

All eight touchdowns scored by both teams were scored on rushing plays.

The Falcons, who are nursing some injuries, raised their District 24-5A record to 2-0 and 4-1 overall, never trailed in the game, building up a 21-7 halftime lead.

But the Yellowjackets (0-2 and 0-5) didn’t go away and surprised some folks by putting up three touchdowns against Lake’s defense.

Lake quarterback Eric Canas went into the end zone three times. Two were of the short one and two yard variety but one was a nifty 45-yard run early in the second quarter when he dove into the corner of the end zone for the score.

Jarred Mack also had a spectacular run, this one covering 60 yards, as he muscled his way past an Alvin defender at the 5-yard line into the end zone to give the Falcons a 21-7 lead with 3:34 left in the half.

Garrett Jones scored Lake’s final touchdown with 4:46 remaining in the game to make it 38-14, but the Jackets scored the game’s last touchdown with less than a minute to go.

Alvin running back Ashton Jefferson was the chief workhorse on the ground for the Jackets. He scored two touchdowns. Bruce Horton tallied the final TD for Alvin.

Clear Lake opened the game with what the Falcons do best, a deliberate and time-consuming drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock. This drive began at their own 32 and 15 plays later Canas dove in from the one. Dustin Hopkins kick made it 7-0 and the Falcons were off and running – literally.

Clear Lake’s next game will be on Thursday when they Falcons will be the visiting team at Veterans Memorial against Clear Brook.

Alvin will host Galveston Ball.
