Tighter 22-5A volleyballrace resumes play tonight

By ROBERT AVERY

With Memorial High School losing its one-game lead for third place to Dobie on Tuesday night and La Porte clawing within a game of those two, the race for District 22-5A’s final two postseason berths have gotten considerably tighter heading into play tonight.

After Dobie evened the score against Memorial with a 25-13, 25-21, 12-25, 25-19 verdict, it left the two teams with identical 5-3 district records with six matches to go. La Porte meanwhile went to 4-4 with a 3-1 triumph over Sam Rayburn.

Tonight’s action will have Memorial and Dobie favored to protect that precious one-game lead. Memorial will attempt to snap a two-match losing skid when it hosts Pasadena, a team the Lady Mavs just met on Oct. 1 and won by scores 25-13, 25-12, 25-8. Dobie visits winless South Houston.

Sam Rayburn, at 2-6, travels to unbeaten Pearland, attempting to avenge a 3-0 Round I loss.

The big match of the night features a Deer Park-La Porte showdown. With Pearland the big favorite to get by Sam Rayburn, the once-beaten Lady Deer know they’re in a must-win situation if they’re to stay just one back of Pearland. Obviously La Porte needs the match just as badly since both Memorial and Dobie are big favorites in their contests.
