Bellaire steamrolls Austin

Led by their two-headed running game of Eric Deveaux and Chris Hensley, the Bellaire Cardinals ran all over the Austin Mustangs, 36-0, Saturday at Barnett Stadium.

After a three-and-out on their first possession, the Cards found the endzone on their next drive. A converted 4th and long set up a first and goal on the 8-yard line, and Deveaux took a handoff in for the score. After the successful PAT, Bellaire led 7-0 with 3:56 remaining in the first quarter.

On Austin’s next drive, transfer cornerback Lawrence Syon made a one-handed interception in the end zone to preserve the Cardinals’ lead as the time ran out in the first quarter.

“We’re very happy that he transferred,” said Bellaire head coach Jeff Walker. “He does have some exceptional skills and abilities.”

On the ensuing possession, Bellaire put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive, helped by a 41-yard run by Hensley down to the Austin 7-yard line. From the one, Deveaux took an inside handoff in for the score. The PAT was good, and Bellaire led 14-0 with 6:30 left in the second quarter.

Austin went three-and-out on their next possession, and the Cards had great field possession at the Austin 39. On the fifth play of the possession, Adrian Nelson found Derwyn Lauderdale for a 25-yard touchdown completionto give Bellaire a 21-0 with 1:47 remaining in the first half.

Austin was held to just 84 yards of offense on their five possessions in the first half. Meanwhile, Deveaux finished the first half with 8 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns, and Hensley had 41 yards on three carries.

Adrian Nelson completed 5-of-9 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Four of those passes were complete to Lauderdale, who had 67 total first half receiving yards and a score.

After halftime, Bellaire picked up where they left off. From 17 yards out, Deveaux took a handoff from Nelson and scampered in for another score, giving him three on the day. The PAT snap was dropped by Derwyn Lauderdale, but he picked it up and ran outside to get into the endzone for a two-point conversion to make it 29-0 with 9:44 remaining in the third quarter.

Before all was said and done, Bellaire would add another score when Emmanuel Ojo took a handoff from Sam Harker, and ran it 30 yards for another touchdown to extend their lead to 36-0 with 2:34 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve got a Pony Express going, so we’re going to use both of them,” Walker said of Deveaux and Hensley. “They’re both going to be fresh. I know that the time Hensley rushed against Booker T. He was tired, so we wont have that happen again.”

After last week’s 53-6 dismantling of Milby, Walker said he wanted to send a message. This game was a way to prepare for Madison next week.

“I don’t think it was our best game, but it was a victory,” said Walker. “We did some things very well and we’re getting ready for Madison.”
