Top offenses clash at Berry Center

In District 15, defending district champion Cy Ridge (2-1, 1-0) faces Cy Creek (1-1, 1-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Berry Center.

The Cougars, who finished 0-7 in district play, last season have the top-ranked offense in the district with 539.5 yards per game to the Rams’ 485 yards per game (second highest offense in the district).

“Offensively, we’re going to continue what we’re doing,” Cougars coach Greg McCaig said. “They’re real fast, athletic and well-coached. Our defense has made some serious progress, they forced five turnovers. We limited the run, which was real important.”

Cougars running back Jermichael Selders returns this week after missing last week’s 39-28 win over Langham Creek with a staph infection.

McCaig knows that trying to stop Cy Ridge quarterback Russell Shepard, the district’s top rusher and No. 3 passer, won’t be easy.

“I’m not really sure you do stop him,” McCaig said. “You try to contain him, and you have to be successful offensively so they don’t get into a rhythm. I don’t think there’s one magic secret, he’s one of the best athletes in the nation.’

Cy Ridge coach Gary Thiebaud said the Rams have been working on their defensive efforts after last week’s 43-41 win over Cy Woods, whose offense ranks third in the district with 479 yards per game.

“We’re just trying to get better in pass defense and tackling, getting a rush on the quarterback,” Thiebaud said. “We don’t like to get in (shootouts). We led the league in defense (last year). We’ve always prided ourselves on defense.”

Forest turnovers

Klein Forest football coach Kenny Hammock couldn’t believe the Golden Eagles’ turnover woes in last Friday’s 34-6 loss to Klein Oak.

Klein Forest turned the ball over eight times – four fumbles and four interceptions, and three of those picks were returned for touchdowns.

Hammock said it’s the first time he’s experienced that in 25 years of coaching.

“We’re trying to lick our wounds the best we can,” Hammock said. “You never experience that except for once in a lifetime, you hope.”

The Golden Eagles (2-1, 0-1) will face Spring Westfield (2-0, 1-0), ranked No. 53 nationally by rivals.com, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Klein Memorial Stadium.

Balanced Eagles

Cy Falls, known recently for being an offensive juggernaut, has the district’s top ranked defense, allowing just 191.7 yards per game.

“Last week, the strength was the defense,” Golden Eagles coach David Raffield said. “They really rose up and played a great game. They’re getting better and better.”

Cy Falls (1-2, 1-0) forced five turnovers in a 26-15 win over Jersey Village (0-3, 0-1) last Saturday. They’ll play Cy Springs (2-1, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Berry Center.

Another surprise is Cy Falls senior quarterback Kolby Gray ranking second in the district in rushing yards, just behind Shepard, with 346. Gray established himself as a passing threat last season with over 3,300 yards.

“He’s averaging over 100 yards per game rushing, and that’s a huge difference from last year,” Raffield said. “We haven’t thrown the ball near as much with our young receivers, no doubt (we will).”

West to start for Bearkats

Klein junior quarterback Michael West will get the starting nod when the Bearkats (1-1, 1-0) face Klein Oak (2-0, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Klein Memorial Stadium, but Klein coach Stan Labay said junior quarterbacks Clayton Crum and James Peebles could very likely see playing time as well.

“In high school, you can go with more than one quarterback and do a good job of it,” Labay said. “We’ll probably look at more than one, we still have three in the mix. We’ll see how our momentum goes or doesn’t go. If someone moves the chains, they’ll get more reps.”

The Bearkats defeated Klein Collins (2-1, 0-1) 6-2 last Saturday behind two Ron Doherty field goals.
