Sheriff’s Office recovers large amount of property
On September 16, 2008, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard E. Weaver, 27, of Dayton, and Kenneth L. Mays, 35, of Virginia, for the offense of Burglary of a Habitation. During those arrests, two portable generators and numerous power tools were recovered. And since that time, the investigation into the two men’s recent activities has developed into a much larger case, with thousands of dollars in property being recovered.
“Our investigators have put in a lot of hours on this case,” said Sheriff Greg Arthur. But there’s still more work ahead in getting all of this property back to the rightful owners.”
The Sheriff’s Office needs the victims of thefts and burglaries that occurred over the last two months to contact the S.O. If they filed a report, they will need to have their case number handy. If they were victimized, but did not file a report, then an official report will need to be made. Additionally, they will need to provide as much proof as possible in regard to their missing items. Proof can be serial numbers, owner-applied numbers, receipts, bills of sale, warranty papers, manuals, or an accurate description of the item(s) involved.
Captain Chip Fairchild stated, “A citizen won’t be able to just walk in, look at the various items, point to one and say it belongs to them. We need to be able to determine, through receipts or detailed descriptions, if the property we have does indeed belong to the person that filed the report.”
The items recovered so far include: tillers, chain saws, gas trimmers, leaf blowers, ramps, screw guns, air compressors, band and scroll saws, rods and reels, lawn mowers, drills, generators, vacuum pumps, floor jacks, tool boxes and miscellaneous tools, pressure washers, pole saws, miter/chop saws, and circular saws.
Sheriff Arthur said, “There were two vehicles used in the commission of these crimes: A red Ford Ranger pickup truck, and an older model, multi-colored Chevy pickup truck. It’s possible there’s someone out there that has more information to aid our investigators.”
Contact Sgt. Michelle Watson at 936-336-4500 if you believe your missing item(s) may be part of the large amount of recovered property, or if you have any information about Richard Weaver, Kenneth Mays, and/or the trucks they were suspected to use in the commission of the burglaries and thefts.
