Last minute preparations underway for International Festival of Fort Bend
Organizers are busy making last-minute preparations for the 2nd Annual International Festival of Fort Bend.
This year's event will be held Saturday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Stafford Convention Centre, 10505 Cash Road.
Dozens of nationalities will be represented at the event, which is free to the public.
Highlights of the event will feature a variety of cultural performances, foods from around the world, dancing, entertainment, arts and crafts exhibits, children's attractions, raffle prizes, a multi-cultural parade and a fashion show.
A new feature this year is the "Night of Asia", a ticketed event that will begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information interested persons are asked to call 281-499-9757 or visit the website at www.IF-FB.org.
The schedule of events of the International Festival is as follows:
•11 a.m. – Festival Doors Open…free admission
•11:30 a.m. - Opening Ceremony, including remarks by mayors of sponsoring Fort Bend cities, national anthem and posting of the colors
•12 noon – Indoor parade of cultures
•1 - 6 p.m. - Cultural performances, food and children's activities
•7:30 p.m. - "Night of Asia" in Stafford Centre Theatre, tickets are required. Show will feature featuring Tropical Rhythms Hawaiian dance troupe from Houston will perform a Hawaiian contemporary dance and Philippine folk dance.
•Tropical Rhythms Keiki, a children’s dance group, making their debut performance in Stafford with a kid’s hula dance.
•Israel, in their first appearance at IFFB, performing a contemporary Israeli dance
•The Czech Republic will perform a Czech Polka Medley, a national dance of Czech gatherings.
•Hare Krishna Cultural Center will perform a group song
•India will have solo and group dance and fast paced modern dance.
•Islami Golden Clubs of Houston returns for their second year performance, featuring Al Azhar Band, leading the cultural parade.
•Iran will perform a very distinct Persian classical dance.
•Ghana Association will perform Northern Ghana’s “The Royal Dance”
•Ethiopia who was featured at I-Fest 2008 on the WaMu Center Stage will debut at IFFB 2008 with an incredible Ethiopian Cultural Dance
•Panama will debut with their traditional dance with performers outfitted in, “La Pollera,” a Panamanian gala dance dress - a colorful delicately-handcrafted skirt and blouse that in mid-dance, resembles the fluttering wings of a butterfly.
•Mexico will present Mariachi Juvenvil Sol Y Luna, comprised of eight young perfromers from age 13 to 18 years old, who have played in various venues in Houston, Austin, Sugarland, and the yearly mariachi competition in San Antonio. The groups performance will also include traditional Hispanic, Rachera , and folkloric song performances.
•Vietnamese performers will demonstrate the Vovinam, a famous Vietnamese martial art combining martial arts techniques, self-esteem, discipline and oriental philosophy.
•Karate Legend and Black Belt Hall of Famer Professor Gary Lee and team will present a Japanese Martial arts demonstration.
•Philippines Pagkakaisa Dance Troupe will perform the Bamboo and Bench Dance
•Chung Tai Zen Center will do chants and drums of Chinese folk
•Turkey will perform their traditional Turkish folk dance
•Nigeria Old Bend Cultural Association will perform their traditional dance
•China’s kung fu martial arts demo by American Shaolin Kung Fu combines the striking strength of a tiger, the speed of a leopard and the powerful grace of a dragon creating a highly effective martial arts form.
•Internationally renowned dancer, teacher and choreographer, Dr. Rathna Kumar of the ANJALI Center for Performing Arts will present dances from India and Bangladesh.
