Pearland flattens Sam Rayburn, 59-0

When the 22-5A stats are released this week, Pearland's defense should be No. 1 after smothering Rayburn quarterback Ed Bell, fumbling on this sack, and the entire offense Saturday.

Saturday afternoon’s football game between Sam Rayburn and Pearland enhanced the argument for the University Interscholastic League to create a Class 6A division and to adopt a running clock rule when the score becomes too one-sided.

The state-ranked Oilers definitely enjoyed a one-sided edge on the scoreboard – in the first quarter when Pearland erupted for 42 points en route to a 59-0 thrashing of the Texans in a District 22-5A contest at Newcomb Field.

Pearland’s Kasey Carrier rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Samuel Allen threw three touchdown passes to Kevin Miller as Pearland improved to 4-0 for the season and 2-0 in district. With the offense generating 478 total yards, the Oilers didn’t need any extra help but got it anyway when they blocked a punt for a touchdown.

In terms of points differential, it was the third-most lopsided defeat in the 45-year history of Sam Rayburn football. Only a 67-point loss in 1971 and a 62-point defeat in 1990 were worst losses than Saturday’s. Not even North Shore, the new state record holder for consecutive regular season victories ever beat Sam Rayburn by this many points.

Sam Rayburn may have also lost Eric Espinoza, one of the squad’s better athletes, with a certain period of time with an unspecified shoulder injury. He went down early in the second quarter during a play in which Pearland intercepted a pass and one play later Josh Gonzalez was scampering 47 yards for the team’s final TD of the day.

Pearland completely shut down Sam Rayburn’s offense, holding the Texans to five total yards. By time Rayburn’s offense took the field for the first time, the Texans were already losing 21-0.

To at least make the game a little bit competitive, the Texans had to take care of the football and they didn’t. Twenty-eight of Pearland’s 59 points came directly off turnovers.

Pearland’s opening two kickoffs, a pair of high, shallow boots, were fumbled away and the Oilers scored from 43 and 36 yards out, respectively after each recovery. Rayburn’s opening possession ended in quarterback Ed Bell fumbling the ball and Corbin Smith recovering on the Texans’ 20. Three plays later, Allen and Miller were hooking up for a seven-yard TD pass, creating a 28-0 lead with 5:20 to play in the first.

Rayburn’s second possession ended in the blocked punt that had Eric Chege completely stuffing Angel Ramos’ attempt and Justin Wilson falling on the ball in the end zone. It went to the unbelievable score of 42-0 with still 70 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Carrier bolted 67 yards for the touchdown, his third score of the first quarter and ninth for the season.
