Communities come together for a ‘night out’ on the town
By MEGAN COOPER
Spring Valley Village and Hilshire Village will officially recognize the 25th annual “National Night Out” on Oct. 7.
Residents from both communities have organized neighborhood get-togethers set to run from 6 to 10 p.m. that day.
"National Night Out is an opportunity for the citizens to build on what has always been a strong relationship here in Spring Valley Village with their police department,” Finkelman said. “We look forward to visiting with everyone and welcome the opportunity to strengthen the neighborhood spirit and our police-community partnership.”
As in previous years, Finkelman and other Spring Valley officers will visit each event to visit with residents and give a short speech about crime prevention.
The police department has already distributed crime prevention materials, like brochures on identity theft and security tips, as well as other promotional trinkets for each organizer to distribute at the gatherings.
Finkelman said he is optimistic about this year’s turnout.
“Last year we had a great turnout,” said Chief Gary Finkelman of the Spring Valley Village Police Department. “And this year the police department is anticipating an even greater participation since the weather should be somewhat cooler and absence caused by summer vacations will not be a factor.”
In the past, the event has traditionally been held in August in communities across the country. This year, Texas has become the first state to recognize the event in October in an experiment to see if attendence will improve.
“National Night Out” is a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of organized, law enforcement-affiliated crime and drug prevention programs.
The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and to increase community participation in such programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
