Several arrested here for looting

Despite the fact most homes and businesses were empty when Hurricane Ike came through the Bay Area, there was not an overwhelming amount of looting.
Four people were arrested for looting in Nassau Bay – including a Katrina evacuee – two in League City and one in Taylor Lake Village.
Among the victims in Nassau Bay was its mayor, Don Matter, and former astronaut Owen Garriott.
Three of the four arrested in Nassau Bay lived there. The other was from League City. Sgt. Theresa Relken said police arrested Katrina evacuee Michael Williams, 41, Julie Stamm, 41, and a juvenile, all of Nassau Bay; and Jefferey Yates, 17, of League City.
The adults are being held in the Harris County Jail under $75,000 bonds.
Relken said some property owners had called to report looting but had not filed an official report. She believes there were about seven or eight break-ins the day of the storm and estimated the value of property taken at about $20,000.
She said the foursome had admitted to six break-ins, including four units at the Balboa Apartments.
Seabrook Police Chief Nona Holman said her city experienced “only a few but we were out on the streets patrolling right after the storm.
“We had a few cases where they were taking things sitting out in front of homes – and that upset some homeowners – but actual break-ins totaled about five.”
League City police nabbed two suspects, one attempting to break in a house and another a restaurant and took them off to jail, Sgt. John Jordan said, adding that police also had several burglaries reported.
Lakeview Police Chief Tom Savage said officers arrested a suspect and charged him with criminal trespass at a residence at 4100 Willow Hill.
He also said a key box was stolen from the apartment manager’s office at 4101 NASA Parkway and a TV stolen from an apartment there. Other break-ins were at a residence at 600 Cedar, where several items were missing; at 300 Cedar, where a boat was stolen; and at 4321 NASA Parkway, where tools and tires were stolen from a business.
Webster had no reports of looting and calls to Kemah were not returned.
