Oak Ridge North reschedules workshop
By LAUREN HODGES
The Oak Ridge North City Council has rescheduled its workhsop to Oct. 13 on surface water, sewage and other water issues after the original meeting was postponed due to Hurricane Ike.
First planned for Sept. 15, the rescheduled workshop will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Ridge North municipal complex, 27424 Robinson Road.
Current Oak Ridge North water rates are $8.50 for 5,000 gallons of water and $28.25 for sewer costs for 5,000 gallons.
In other Ike-related discussion, Councilwoman Leah Gray thanked city officials, police officers and public works department employees for their efforts.
Gray singled out Lonnie Bienvenu, public works director, for responding quickly after a concerned resident called about possible flooding caused by a tree that landed in a drainage ditch.
Also, according to Gray, during the height of the storm, Oak Ridge North police used winches attached to their vehicles to clear trees down across Jeremy Court. The work helped a pregnant woman going into labor get to the hospital.
“Overall everybody was chipping in and doing a terrific job for the city,” said Mayor Fred O’Connor.
O’Connor also presented a plaque to Doug Bray, a volunteer from New Jersey who helped the city get supplies.
Police Seizure Fund:
The Oak Ridge North Police Department will give $1,500 dollars taken from seizure funds for upcoming National Night Out efforts, said Andy Walters, Oak Ridge North chief of police.
National Night Out, the community-wide focus on crime prevention, will take place from 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 7.
This year marks the first time National Night Out, traditionally held in South County in August, will be held in October to avoid the hottest weather of the summer.
Traffic and Parking:
The city has installed a four-way stop sign at Pine Manor and Harlan Roads to monitor pedestrian traffic from Oak Ridge High School.
The city also will also be expanding their “No Parking,” area around Susan Street and on Pine Manor Road near Oak Ridge High School in coming days, said Oak Ridge North Chief of Police Andy Walters.
“We have a problem with kids who are not allowed to park on campus,” Walters said. “They need more space to be able to park in.”
Sign and fencing ordinances:
According to Mendes, no decisions have been made about the sign or fencing ordinances in regards to commerce park. He said changes are underway.
