More food stamp offices open along gulf
AUSTIN — Ten more Gulf Coast area food stamp offices that have been closed since Hurricane Ike were opened Monday.
The reopened offices include another Houston location and offices in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area.
Low-income families in disaster areas may be eligible for up to two months of emergency food stamp benefits if they meet income and asset requirements. A family of four earning up to $2,915 this month may qualify for assistance. Applicants will need to provide proof of their identify and address, such as a driver’s license, and will have to answer questions about their income, bank account balances, household and expenses. People who provide additional documentation may qualify for benefits for a longer period.
Texas Health and Human Services offices that reopened Monday include:
Houston: 10060 Fuqua.
Beaumont: 285 Liberty St.
Port Arthur: 5860 9th Avenue, Suite A.
Orange: 2222 Gloria Drive.
Coldspring: 1 State Highway 150.
Corrigan: 209 W. Ben Franklin.
Groveton: Rock Building, Highway 287.
San Augustine: 902 E. Main.
Woodville: 930 N. Magnolia.
Silbsee: 1215 E. Highway 327.
Hurricane victims also may pick up and drop off applications at Abundant Life Cathedral, 11230 Harwin Drive in Houston. HHSC staff will be available to answer questions and take applications from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week.
A complete list of food stamp offices is available at www.hhsc.state.tx.us. Offices will be open extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week.
Two-page applications for disaster food stamps also are available in English and Spanish at www.hhsc.state.tx.us and can be faxed toll-free to 877-447-2839.
