The Lady Longhorns continue to be a superior volleyball team despite the loss of key player Kourtney Chorman who has been sidelined due to an injury.
“I was doing a jump serve in Tarkington High School gym and upon landing didn’t realize there was a ball under me and I landed on it and twisted my ankle,” Kourtney said.
Losing Chorman is crucial as the Lady Longhorns continue to compete in district. Chorman’s presence will be missed not only in the kills statistics column but for her enthusiasm.
“She pumps us up,” Morgan O’ Brien said.
For Samantha Martin, without Chorman she will have to look for someone else to assist.
“It is upsetting to lose Kourtney, she is a big asset to the team,” said Chorman.
Chorman’s injury happened right before they were getting on the bus to travel to Cleveland to play the Lady Indians.
They admit it impacted their playing. They appeared to be in slow motion as if they were robots that ran on batteries and their battery cells were low.
“I felt we played a really slow-paced game but we were recovering from the fact that we had just lost our kill leader for the season,” Coach Johnson said.
The Lady Longhorns dealt with this adversity, not only beating the Lady Indians in three games, but defeating Coldspring and Huffman in other games.
In fact, they were not tested until the Huffman game, in which they lost their first match game in district.
Without Chorman to help in future games, the Lady Longhorns have had to reform their game and utilize other talents.
“We implemented a new offense, due to our loss of Kourtney. We pulled up a JV player, Ashli Goss, to help out with the setting, allowing Samantha Martin to hit more,” Coach Johnson said.
The Lady Longhorns are so talented that this week individual players such as Morgan O’Brien, Megan Rasberry, Jordan Galloway and Samantha Martin had to step up big. By these ladies playing on different cylinders, it has ignited other players who are producing big, such as Taylor Stovall, Tori Rhodes, Brittany Chorman and Miranda Wright.
“I’m really proud of the way the girls have overcome the adversity of losing two starters since returning from the hurricane break. I believe in them and they are beginning to believe in themselves again,” Coach Johnson said.
The Lady Longhorns played Liberty Lady Panthers on Tuesday but because of the paper’s print schedule, the results will be in next week’s paper. On Friday, the Lady Longhorns will play against Coldspring at home.
