USO canteen coming to Ellington Monday and Tuesday
Gallery Furniture and the USO are bringing two Mobile Canteens to the Houston/Galveston area beginning Sunday, Sept. 28 to provide food and support for military families affected by the recent devastation of Hurricane Ike.
“The objective for this event is to let military families of greater Houston and affected communities know that the USO will support them on the home front while their loved ones are serving this country,” said Lt. Col. Susie Barlow with the USO. “Texas has the 2nd largest concentration of US military families in the country and both the USO and Gallery Furniture are hoping to give relief to those hardest hit by Ike.”
The canteens, which are modified RV’s, were designed after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina to help out military families in emergency situations. Each vehicle features a front slide-out area with comfortable bench seating and a large flat panel television monitor. The center of the vehicle includes four networked Xbox gaming stations where users can compete against each other, or play video games on their own. A live internet link is available for users to surf the internet or send emails to friends and family.
The canteen's rear section features a full-service food and beverage area that can be accessed by troops and their families from the outside. Gallery Furniture, who is a strategic partner with the USO, will be providing food and drinks for the mobile canteens while they are in the area.
“Soldiers can’t do their jobs when their families are hurting,” said Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture. “There was a recent story about an area soldier who had to take emergency leave from Iraq to come and help his family whose home was destroyed by Ike. His story prompted me to call our partners at the USO to see how we could help our soldier’s families so they can concentrate on the war on terror.”
Currently, the USO Mobile Canteens are scheduled to be at the following locations on the dates listed below. More dates and locations will be added depending on need.
