Ike damage cancels rest of Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion season
By CHARLIE BIER
Hurricane Ike has brought the curtain down on the remainder of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s entertainment season.
Cancellations include all shows that were scheduled to take place at the Pavilion through Nov. 16.
Ike-driven winds caused extensive damage to the Pavilion’s fabric roof over the stage and reserved seating area, as well as problems with the network of cables and columns that support the tent-like cover.
Initial estimates peg Ike’s damage at about $2 million, said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of the Pavilion.
The Pavilion also suffered damage to the stage house structure, or building surrounding the Pavilion’s main stage, as well as torn awnings and crumpled metal roofs over concession stands.
“(The hurricane) really did a number on us,” MacDonald said.
A report from a structural engineering firm hired to access damage concluded it would be unsafe to hold events in the Pavilion until repairs can be made, said Cindy DuBois, the Pavilion’s director of marketing and education.
“And unfortunately they aren’t the kinds of repairs that can be made overnight,” DuBois said.
Events cancelled include: Houston Symphony’s “Music of Mozart” on Sept. 19; Santana on Sept. 20; 3 Doors Down on Sept. 21; Robert Plant & Alison Krauss on Sept. 26; Houston Ballet’s “Classics on Pointe” on Oct. 2; KSBJ’s “The Music Builds Tour” on Oct. 3; Brad Paisley on Oct. 17; Houston Symphony’s “Hocus Pocus Pops” on Oct. 24; Buzzfest XXII on Oct. 26 and the 14th Annual Children’s Festival on Nov. 13-16.
DuBois said concert promoter LiveNation is attempting to reschedule the 3 Doors Down concert, likely for early 2009 in the Houston area.
Also, KSBJ’s “The Music Builds Tour” featuring:
Third Day, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay and Robert Randolph & the Family Band has been relocated to the Berry Center in Cypress and will happen at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, the original date planned. For information about tickets purchased to the previously scheduled concert, visit www.ksbj.org. Tickets to the new event can be purchased at www.ticketservant.com. Refunds for the cancelled show begin Monday, Sept. 29.
Refunds for cancelled events will be automatically credited to the credit card of ticket holders who bought through www.ticketmaster.com or by telephone through Ticketmaster. For tickets purchased at the Pavilion ticket office or Ticketmaster outlets, refunds will be made in person at the point of purchase. For more information regarding ticket refunds for any of the cancelled events, visit www.woodlandscenter.org.
As for next year, MacDonald said he expects the Pavilion to be back in business in time for the March 15 season opener, a scheduled U.S. Navy Band concert.
“We had a great season leading up to the hurricane, and right now we’re just looking forward to a great 2009,” MacDonald said.
In the meantime, repairs could include returning the Pavilion to the way it was before Ike struck Sept. 12. Or, the rebuilding process could involve expanding the amount of area previously covered by the roof.
The ultimate decision will be made by the Pavilion’s board of directors.
“We’re reevaluating where we are, looking at our options,” MacDonald said.
The Pavilion carries both a business interruption insurance policy to cover lost revenue as well as full replacement coverage for the building.
