Tom Kiefer graduates from FBI academy

After spending 10 weeks at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virg., Shenandoah Police Department Capt. Thomas Kiefer had one thing on his mind during the graduation ceremony Sept. 11: getting home.
Almost as soon as the 10 a.m. ceremony was over, and Kiefer and about 250 other officers were recognized, he hopped into his car, hoping to be back to Texas in time to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. By Saturday night he was back in Shenandoah, forgoing sleep with the rest of the department and helping the community get back on its feet.
The chance to go to the FBI Academy was a long time coming for Kiefer. He applied and was on a waiting list for three years before being selected to participate in the 234th class to go through the academy.
“It was a great opportunity,” Kiefer said. “It’s tough to be away from your family for 10 weeks, but if I had to do it over again I would. … It’s probably the most elite training that you can go to in your career.”
While at the academy Kiefer took courses on forensic statement analysis, executive leadership, conflict resolution, promoting the law enforcement image and ethical dilemmas in law enforcement.
Prior to Kiefer, the last SPD member to attend the academy was former captain Mike Williams in 2005. Lt. Bryan Carlisle is slated to be the next SPD member to attend.
