Resort and Conference Center praised, awarded

The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center announced Monday that it was honored by its peers and clients with the annual “Best of the South” award from Meeting South magazine.

“Offering the area’s best meeting facilities doesn’t mean much without a dedicated staff of professionals to serve our guests,” said Kent Johnson, general manager. “This award is a reflection of happy employees who love what they do.”

The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center is the only Houston-area resort that made the list.

Readers of the magazine were asked to vote for their favorite properties based on criteria such as quality of meeting space, guest rooms and availability of technical equipment.

The resort also recently received kudos from community officials for feeding firefighters after Hurricane Ike.

The resort donated hot lunches and dinners to 320 first responders for the three days following the storm, said Chief Alan Benson.

“They deserve some recognition for that,” said Deb Staley, The Woodlands Association board member.

The resort would not have been able to do it without the support of its staff, said Tory Enriquez, director of sales and marketing.

“Our employees were really great through that whole trying time,” she said. “As always they did a great job serving people.”

The resort also housed several groups who were working to improve conditions before and after the storm.

Enriquez said she could not disclose company names, but at least one energy company booked rooms.

“They were able to field calls, be online and take care of business while the hurricane went on,” Enriquez said. “So we were busy during the hurricane and busy after it.”
