Magnolia slips past Waller with last-second field goal

WALLER - The Waller High School varsity Bulldogs lost to the Magnolia Bulldogs 17-14 on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Magnolia kicked the game winning field goal with 3 seconds left in the ballgame.
Waller played hard all the way to the end, and there was a “never give up” attitude on display.
Offensively, turnovers kept being the thorn in Waller’s side.
Jermaine Davis, Chris Weigand, Alex McFad-din, Jason Lafferty, Glen Hill, Christ Tompkins, Miller Pierce, and Austin Tilton all had solid performances.
Pierce scored Waller’s first touchdown from 20 yards out on a quarterback sweep. Jermaine Davis scored Waller’s second touchdown on a 30-yard scamper around the left side. Jacobie White and Sulay Varnie contributed with solid blocking performances as well.
Defensively, the Bull-dogs had a very good night. Twice, Magnolia was turned away on fourth and goal situations with no points. Scott Thourot, Josh Dorsey, Javier Cuello, Alex Ramirez, Donovan White, Jacobie White, Darius Nash, Tyler Bain, Keith White, Sonny Cook, Robert Loewe, Christ Tomp-kins, Miller Pierce, Josh Haines, Jonathon White, and Chad Madden stepped up big when they had to in order to shut down Magnolia. Magnolia also tried a fake field goal that was snuffed out by the Bulldogs.
This week, the Bulldogs will play a dangerous Montgomery Bear team that narrowly lost to Brenham in last week’s district opener. The Bulldogs are looking to get back on track after this heart-breaking loss, but the resolve they have shown all year leaves no doubt they will come out determined to win. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in Bulldog stadium. Come support the Bulldogs!
WHS Football Players of the Week are Offense, Austin Tilton; Defense, Scott Thourot; and Special Teams, Will Garcia.
WHS JV
The Waller High School Bulldogs JV faced off this last Thursday night, Sept. 25, against the Bulldogs of Magnolia.
Waller played an outstanding game on both sides of the football defeating Magnolia 20-14.
Offensively, Cory Smith accounted for two of Waller’s touchdowns in a phenomenal performance. David McDade also accounted for one touchdown on a punt return.
Defensively, Cody Young was a major contributor on the defensive line with two big time sacks.
On the last play of the game Kalyn Utz intercepted a last ditch effort pass by Magnolia to end the game.
The sophomore team also walks away with a victory on Thursday night against Magnolia 8-6.
Offensively, Brandon Sandoval played excellent at quarterback. Defensively, Austin Martin was the outstanding player.
With no time left on the clock and down 6-0 David Williams came up with a huge punt return for a touchdown to tie the ball game 6-6. Waller scored a two-point conversion by Chris Ray to win the game.
The Waller Bulldog’s JV and sophomore will face off against the Montgomery Bears this Thursday night in Montgomery at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
WHS Freshman
Both of the WHS freshman football teams battled the Magnolia Bulldogs this past Thursday, Sept. 25, at Magnolia High School.
The white team began the game with a 60-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage by Quincy Mayes. Despite several impressive drives by the offense, the Waller Bulldogs were unable to put the ball in the end zone the rest of the game.
White team’s defense played well and kept the score to a one touchdown lead halfway through the fourth quarter, but the game ended with white team losing by a score of 20-6.
Offensively, the white team was lead by Noe Lozaon for his blocking and Quincy Mayes for his impressive touchdown run while the defensive effort was lead by Nick Campise and Israel Reyes.
For the maroon team, the game ended in a tie at 12-12 with both sides of the ball playing well the entire game.
The offense had over five drives of 50-plus yards and was able to score twice.
Maroon’s team defense constantly pursued the ball throughout the entire game and never allowed Magnolia an offensive play of 20 yards or more. Defensive stand outs for the maroon team were Hunter Schmidt and T. J. Nelson who both showed their tenacity by never stopping until the referee blew the whistle.
Offensive standouts were Eric Huffman for his leadership at the quarterback position and Rowdy Haack for his relentless blocking efforts.Waller’s freshman teams will play again this Thursday, Oct. 2, against Montgomery with the white team starting at 5 p.m., followed by the maroon team.
