With a stellar performance from the U.S. men’s volleyball team at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Marion Chlebana, the founder and director of the Texas ThunderVolleyball Club, hopes to take the excitement from the games to begin the area’s first boys volleyball program.
“We want to evolve with the sport and boys volleyball is that next step and we feel like this is the perfect time to start.”
Boys tryouts will be held on the same day as Texas Thunder tryouts, Sept. 28, and boys teams will be formed based on the level of interest.
“As long as we have at least eight boys within a two-year age group, we can form a team,” Chlebana said.
Tryouts for girls Texas Thunder Volleyball Club teams for the 2008-09 USAV season will be held Sept. 28 at The Gym for all age groups.
Girls within the ages of 8-14 years old will tryout for Project Volleyball from 3 to 6 p.m., while players ages 15 and older will try out from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
For Chlebana, who began Texas Thunder in 1999, the club is about much more than just volleyball.
“Our ideas and fundamentals are that we are not teaching for now, but for college.”
Since opening the club, Chlebana has had a 90 percent recruiting success rate.
In addition, Chlebana has a nutritionist meet with her teams on the first day of practice and has even brought in self-defense and self-awareness specialists to help prepare her girls for college.
While Texas Thunder has developed a strong local presence through the years, the club has also attracted players from as far away as Lufkin and Lake Charles, La., in addition to sending out players to compete on the college level across the nation.
As a result, Chlebana hopes to expand her Texas Thunder club into Arkansas and Louisiana for this season as well.
“Because we already have athletes in Louisiana and a strong interest in Arkansas, we would like to set up teams to be able to keep those athletes under our name and the network we have developed with college recruiters,” Chlebana said.
The Arkansas club will be conducted by a former Texas Thunder athlete who has gone into coaching after a successful college career.
