The Class 5A-District 13 and Class 5A-District 15 football title chases were upside-down Saturday night with a pair of defending district champions losing.

Cy Creek (2-1, 2-0), which finished 2-8, 0-7 in district play last season, upset defending district champion Cy Ridge (2-2, 1-1), 31-21. The Cougars are now tied with Cy Falls (2-2, 2-0) atop the district standings.

“Any win is a great win,” Cy Creek coach Greg McCaig said. “(We have to) to keep the kids grounded. We still have to keep playing. It’s a very positive thing to build on.”

The Cougars, known for their offense, forced run-dominated Cy Ridge to the air and held their opponent to a season-low 21 points.

Klein Forest (3-1, 1-1) shocked defending district champion Spring Westfield, (2-1, 1-1), 33-30 in overtime to force a six-way tie for second place in the District 13 standings. Klein Oak (3-0, 2-0) leads District 13.

The Golden Eagles, eight days removed from a 34-6, eight-turnover loss to Klein Oak, defeated the Mustangs on a 34-yard Jacob Decker field goal. Spring Westfield entered the game ranked 53rd in the nation by rivals.com.

“We just said we were going to be physical,” Golden Eagles coach Kenny Hammock said. “And it worked for us.”

Hammock called it the second biggest win in his five year reign at Klein Forest. He said the biggest one came last year when the Golden Eagles knocked off Lufkin.
