Help comes from out of state

The Deer Park Deer went back to work shortly after the storm. Just before Ike rolled in, the Deer were building on a promising 2-0 start to the season; they will travel to Pasadena ISD Veterans Stadium this Friday at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Trojans of South Houston in the first district battle of the 2008 season. Shown here; the Deer practice on their home turf as food and ice lines form in the background.

Well, the process of moving forward has already begun as street lights are once again beginning to illuminate our humble city one bulb at a time.

The entire week following Hurricane Ike, the city of Deer Park and surrounding areas were filled with workers from the city of Houston along with contract workers from nearly every state in the U.S. It was a strong collective effort put forth and many times one could see the tired, yet determined, expression on their faces as they worked feverously around the clock in attempts to restore power and comfort to the residents of Deer Park.

On a personal note, I would like to extend a tremendous “Thank You” on behalf of the Broadcaster and the city of Deer Park to these great folks who worked so feverously night and day for our sake.

I would also like to extend a tremendous “Way to Go Deer Park” to all our residents who got to work after the storm (with no power) clearing away debris, and helping out there neighbors.

As one took a ride through the city of Deer Park, down each street, one could see mini crews of neighbors going from house to house armed with personal chainsaws and what ever they could find to help out other neighbors who were hit hard and really in need of the help. One could also see kind neighbor, after kind neighbor running electrical cords from their generators to other houses in attempts to provide a little relief from the conditions following Ike.

With the combined effort from our residents and these dedicated crews, Deer Park began taking early steps forward.

One particular crew from the great State Missouri; known as the “Show Me State”; made the trek all the way down to Texas to help clear away the debris in front of nearly every home in Deer Park.

As the huge industrial sized picker scooped up limbs, logs and huge tree trunks alike from the front of the homes on our street, one of the guys leaned over and said to me, “You know I have been all over the United States assisting in situations just like this and I have never seen a harder working town than this,” said the young man from Missouri, “this is a town that really gets after it and willing to lend a helping hand! A whole lot of other places are not like that!”

After hearing that, I became filled with that feeling you get when you know you are in the right place; despite being without power and looking at possibly weeks without it; there was no other place I’d rather be than on my street helping out my neighbors. As the week progressed we could see those same guys from Missouri up early in the morning and leaving back to their camp site just before dark; inspired by the efforts of our residents.

This past Sunday the truck came rumbling through again and the guy hollered at me from the top of the picker, “Hey! I’m one year older today!” I thought to myself, “This guy is working on his birthday and on a Sunday by himself (stopping the truck, then climbing up the ladder to operate the picker) just doing what he can do to help us out.”

After telling one of my neighbors, we decided to put together a collection to buy this guy a birthday present (a couple of Texas t-shirts and a hat from Walgreens) and thank him and his crew for all the hard work they put in.

I am sure there are so many stories like that all around Deer Park; and that’s what we are all about- hard work and being grateful for what we have. There were so many people stepping out of their homes giving water and Gatorades to these guys working as diligently as possible.

Deer Park, we are a great team and we’ll continue to move forward as a team and as a family.

Having said all that and giving credit to all the folks working hard on the scene and behind the scenes we’ve got some football action coming up tomorrow, Friday, as our Deer emerge from the layoff eager to get back to work on what looks to be a promising season of football.

The scheduled game with Cy-Fair High School was officially cancelled and will not be made up. With that game lost; due to the storm situations; District 22-5A play will pick up at 7:00 p.m. at Pasadena ISD Veterans Stadium at Newcomb Field against the 0-1 South Houston Trojans.

This game will kickoff a crucial two game stretch that will see the Bulldogs barking at the gates of Abshier the following week.

The Trojans will be competing in their second game of the year and their last game; a 36-0 debacle at the hands of Baytown Sterling; really didn’t set so well with the Trojans who have managed just 65 yards of total offense.

Nevertheless, the Trojans are none to be taken lightly especially after the layoff; as the Deer will need to get after them early and often to set the early tone for the game.

The following game will be more then just a duel between two rivaling towns. The residents of both towns will be looking to the friendly rivalry and ball game as a means to uplift the spirits to two neighboring Texas towns ready to get back on their feet, put the pieces back together, move forward past the debris and put the cold memory of Hurricane Ike behind them.

The La Porte Bulldogs; currently 0-2 after two tough losses to Baytown Sterling (21-19) and Baytown Lee (17-14); will duel with 1-1 Rayburn this Friday and then prepare for the backyard brawl with the Deer at Abshier the following Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 p.m.

On the girls side; the Lady Deer Volleyball Program began district play this past Wednesday at Watkins Gym-South Campus. The 13-14 Lady Deer led by nine seniors in Kristen Cruse, Whitney Ellisor, Jamie Haas, Lara Johnson, Megan Matejka, Julie Niess, Emily Tucker, Rachel Wade, and Brittany Weiler will look make another run at a district title in their final year at Deer Park High School.

Coach Russell Elfstrom and Coach Mike Walker have scheduled to attend their respective meets with the men’s varsity cross country set to compete at the Pasadena Memorial Invitational on Friday and the girls’ varsity cross country set to run in Aldine on Saturday. Coach Elfstrom had words of encouragement about the city of Deer Park moving forward, “We need to get moving forward; it is very important that we go on as quickly as possible,” said a hopeful Elfstrom, “we have already scheduled to attend our meets and students are looking to comeback to school on Wednesday. In fact I am looking to get my boys into one more race just before the district meet. I am certain we will be back to were we need to be soon.”

As a town we are doing just that as you can see the maroon Deer Park Deer T-Shirts being sold all around town as more stores began to open their doors for business, the lines for gas have subsided and now it’s time to come together as a town and as one big family for a good night of Texas Friday football action. The boys in the maroon, white and gold will look to carry the hopes of a proud city into battle this Friday against the Trojans. Come on out and support our city as we move forward into brighter days ahead.
