PV hustles to meet rental demand

While many businesses suffered because of Ike, some are booming.

Owner Odis L. Peavy said that the business sustained damage and was without power until Wednesday.

But because of the storm, PV Rentals has had the Red Cross rent 15 vehicles, CenterPoint Energy rented 35 vehicles and FEMA got six or seven, said PV Rentals GM Craig Burt.

“We have helped a number of agencies,” Burt said. “We have had relationships with the relief agencies for some time, and CenterPoint has come to us in the past.”

PV Rentals lost their sign and had some damage to the roof, but Burt said it was all minor damage. The business had been running on a gas generator until Wednesday when power was restored, but the majority of their employees are still without power.

To help the employees out, Burt said they are working the employees only half days and buying lunch for them.

“Everyone has been in pretty good moods all things considered,” Burt said. “Even with the hardships are home, they have been in good spirits overall. They know everything will work itself out.”

However, things haven’t been easy for PV Rentals. After renting the majority of their box trucks, 4-by-4 trucks and industrial trucks each day, the workers had to do everything by hand because they had no power.

That meant not being able to wash the vehicles, manually checking all the engines in the vehicles to see if they need repairs and manually checking the mileage and inventory of trucks each day.

“It’s been extra hard to get the vehicles ready without power because we have to write everything down,” Burt said. “It is a lot more challenging. We have had some hitches because there were things that we thought were ready that weren’t.”

PV Rentals has three Houston-area locations and have all three of them up and running. Peavy said he expects business to be back to normal this week.

“People need vehicles, and they are happy to get them,” he said. “We are happy to help.”
