Art Cars to roll into Northwest Houston

A definitive collection of art is coming to Northwest Houston But these 3-D works aren’t on a canvas and can’t be hung on a gallery wall.

On Oct. 5, Trader’s Village will become a museum for the annual Village Art Car Show where more than 75 vehicles from the Houston Art Car Klub will be under the Red Expo 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Trader’s Village had been holding this event for several years, said spokesperson Mike Baxter.

“It all started when the owners of Trader’s Village, who operate out of the Fort Worth area, was watching a story about the art cars in Houston,” Baxter said. “He thought that was the coolest thing he’s ever seen.”

So the owner flew down to Houston to see the Art Car parade, walked down Allen Parkway and met the artists. He decided then that he wanted to hold an event at Trader’s Village.

So Baxter met with the Houston Art Car Klub and invited them to hold a fall event at Trader’s Village, six months after their parade takes place.

“So what we do is make a donation to their club that they use to finance their events during the year, such as World Art Car Day,” said Baxter. “They’ve been a very good partner and a fun group to work with.”

In past years, as many as 55 or 60 cars have been at the event. But due to last year’s rain, none of the convertibles could drive out to Northwest Houston, and only 35 cars were onsight.

This year, 40 cars are already registered and as many as 50 could be present, Baxter said.

“It’s a real family type thing because the cars are so fun and outrageous,” he said. “It’s a fun clean event and a chance for people who don’t get to drive down to Allen Parkway or downtown to actually get close and touch the cars, as well as meet the people who did them.”

The market is just minutes northwest of downtown Houston on N. Eldridge Road off of Highway 290. Free to the public, parking $3.
