Buyers wanted for annual auction

Now that the grand and reserve champions have been named in each category of the livestock and non-livestock shows at the 23rd annual East Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo, the projects are up for sale at the auction on Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. at Bull Sallas Park in New Caney.
The auction will begin with the grand champion steer and 90 percent of the money made on each sale will go back to the students. The other 10 percent will go toward the fair and rodeo’s operating costs.
“The purpose of the auction is for the exhibits that were placed high in their respective classes in the livestock and non-livestock shows to be sold to buyers in the community,” said Alan Moreau, president of the EMC Fair and Rodeo.
The event expects to have 130 projects up for sale, which is the same amount prior to Hurricane Ike. While most of the other events were cancelled, the livestock and non-livestock shows were rescheduled to give students a chance to show off their hard work. Because schedules and events had to be re-worked, winners of the livestock show had to feed their animals another two weeks until the auction.
“The students did a great job taking care of their animals during the storm and we had the same amount of exhibitors at the show as we did prior to the hurricane,” Moreau said.
Money raised by the students after they sell their animals usually goes toward the purchase of another animal for next year’s event or for another livestock show. Some students save it for their college education.
To exhibit in the EMC Fair and Rodeo, students begin in January with the purchase of their steers. Those who show lambs and goats buy their projects in May; pigs are bought at the end of May or beginning of June and poultry is bought during the summer. Rabbits are purchased throughout the year.
“This auction is very important and we encourage anyone to come out and participate,” he said. “We understand it is tough times with the storm and the economy, but we would like to see the youths of EMC supported. Every little bit helps.”
Projects that do not make the sale are either sold for a floor price, taken home by the students and processed or are sold to someone who the students know.
