Bavarian adventure for Bellaire and Lamar students
Here’s the thing about exchange programs at local high schools. After foreign students attend school here and travel a bit in the U.S., local students get to visit those they hosted in their homelands.
Such was the case for 15 students and two teachers from Bellaire High School and Lamar High School. They traveled to Germany this summer as part of the German American Partnership Program. Under this program, 16 German students came to the U.S. in March. Half stayed with Bellaire families and attended school at BHS, half stayed with Lamar families and attended that school.
In June, the host students had the opportunity to spend three weeks with their German partners in Olching, a town near Munich.
The group attended Olching Gymnasium (high school) with their host partners and took field trips to Rothenburg, Berchtesgarden, the mountain lake Konigsee, Munich, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles, Dachau concentration camp, Salzburg, Passau, Andechs, and EADS, which is the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company.
Their linguistic skills improved as they made friends and integrated into the daily life of the host families and community, participants said.
Adam Kaiser, a 2008 graduate of BHS, had participated once before in 2005, the last time the exchange took place.
“I was inexperienced and knew little German then,” he said. “This year I felt more comfortable and really got to know the people and the culture.” Kaiser’s family joined him in Germany at the end of his trip and met his host family, forging a bond of friendship.
“We stayed ten days and got to know his exchange family very well. As a matter of fact, we are hoping they are going to come to Houston either next Easter or summer,” said Sara Kaiser, Adam’s mom.
Bellaire students participating in the exchange were: Adam Kaiser, Edgar Walters, Jonathan Eagleson, Terrence Liu, Rachel Fairchild, Sarah Gossett, Lia Wu, and Garrett Nielsen.
Lamar students were: Zuhdi Abdo, Rachel Grosman, Jonelle Walder, Desmond Schipper, Julie Ewell, Oliva Johnson, and Ellen McNeff.
German teachers Michael Rossow of BHS and Sylvia Wagman of LHS of accompanied the students as chaperones.
