Debris hauling fleet clearing likes of piles

In Houston, a fleet of debris haulers will soon be handling an amount daily that’s equal to what the Solid Waste Department typically collects in a month, city statistics show in a press release issued Tuesday.
About 800 trucks and loaders are working clearing the debris, collecting up to 100,000 cubic yards of storm debris per day. City of Houston, contractor and mutual aid assistance from other major cities in Texas are working the project .
Between Sept, 14 and Sept. 22, 411,825 cubic yards of storm debris have been collected, which represents about 10,000 truck loads.
To expedite storm-related clean-up:
At curbside, stack debris by type: vegatative, construction, appliances and hazardous.
Bundle limbs into 8- to 12-foot sections and store them (neatly) away from storm drains.
Houston residents can also haul small amounts (a pick-ups’s worth) of storm debris to any of the neighborhood trash depositories, which are open daily 9 a.m.-7 p.m. You’ll need to show proof of residence and a drivers license or a photo I.D. to leave trash. No household garbage, however.

“We asked for your patience because the extent of storm damage will require us to continue debris collection,” Solid Waste Department Director Harry Hayes said in a prepared statement.
Houston’s Solid Waste Department resumed regular and heavy trash pick-up this week. Curbside recycling has been suspended until further notice.
