Town hall meeting to discuss Copperfield trail system

Copperfield residents have been wearing makeshift jogging trails into the banks that border the bayous behind their homes for years. Now, a local entity wants to make them official.

Water Control Improvement District 145 will hold a town hall Oct. 9 at Labay from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to discuss a trail system proposal that will appear on the ballot in November.

Board members of WCID 145, which includes five municipal utility districts that provide water and sewer services to residents of the 1,800-acre community, will present the proposal and will be on hand to answer questions.

The 15.5-mile trail system will wrap along Horsepen Bayou, and several channels that connect to that central waterway, and meander through Easton Commons, Copperfield Place, Northmead, Middlegate Village, Southdown Village and Southcreek Village.

Benches, trash receptacles, pet relief station, water fountains and wildflower planting areas would be intermittently placed along the 8-foot wide pathway.

A few years ago the legislature gave water control improvement districts the authority to sell bonds and finance construction for parks and recreational purposes, said Board Member Dick Rue.

“We’ve been thinking about it for a long time,” Rue said. “Most of the board members wanted to have some sort of centralized walkway system. Now we are in the position where we can do it and we’re excited about getting it done.”

Rue said that according to MetroStudy, people who buy homes are favorable toward amenities such as green belts and trail systems within their community.

“We think that the addition of this system will not only be a nice benefit to the residents, but will add and increase the value of the homes within the community,” Rue said.

If approved the park bond election is approved, WCID 145 hopes to start construction on the project in the second half of 2009.
