Czech Fest, bike rally unaffected by Ike
By JOSH HARDWICK
Hurricane Ike’s untimely arrival may have thrown many lives into disarray, but those looking to get their minds off the past few weeks can find respite at a few upcoming local events.
In Crosby, the 68th annual Czech Festival opens at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5, at the Crosby Fairgrounds.
Sponsored by the Sacred Heart Church of Crosby, the festival celebrates Crosby’s longstanding Czechoslovakian heritage, said festival co-chairman Cindy Fox.
“Crosby began as a Czech community and many of our parishioners are Czechs who have lived here all their lives,” she said. “The festival is also a sort of homecoming for those who may have moved away to come back, visit with relatives and make up lost time.”
The festival also serves as a fund-raiser for the church through a live auction. The most popular event in years past, parishioners auction off everything from jewelry and golf equipment to slot machines and paid vacations.
“You name it, we have it,” said Fox.
Also up for grabs are four handmade quilts from the Sacred Heart Altar Society. Each year these quilts are among the most popular items offered for auction at the festival.
For four hours every Tuesday 10 quilters from Sacred Heart Church gather to piece together these intricate works of art that can sell for as much as $15,000 per quilt, said member Kathy Roder.
Four quilts have been prepared for this year’s auction, including the aptly-named, “Summer’s End” with what Roder described as having, “silent fall colors.”
“Last year we got $27,000 for four quilts. That last quilt is usually our biggest seller,” said Roder. “It’s always something all the ladies look forward to: seeing how much they will go for.”
In addition to the auction, Fox said that food, beer and entertainment will be staples of the day, including festival favorites such as Bingo, game booths and children’s games.
Live music from Czech bands and other local entertainers will also be on hand throughout the day.

In Baytown, minimal damage sustained by Houston Raceway Park will not stop the venue from hosting the self-styled, “biggest, baddest motorcycle rally ever.”
The four-day Texas National Motorcycle Rally starts Oct. 2 and continues through Oct. 5.
Motorbike enthusiasts are encouraged to show off their rides and tell tales of the road while more than 200 vendors of food, drinks and motorcycle accessories and apparel will also be available.
Musical guests Tracy Lawrence, The Marshall Tucker Band and Kenny Wayne Shephard will be performing each night of the event starting Oct. 2.
