Lady Pirates trying to overcome obstacles

The Lady Pirates were disoriented going into their second game in district as they played against the Lady Indians last Thursday night.
Although they won in three games, 27-25, 25-12 and 25-23, the Lady Pirates appeared to be a bit rusty for good reasons attributed to Hurricane Ike.
The hurricane destroyed their gym by blowing parts of the roof off and resulting in water damage to the floor. This means that until repairs are made, the girls can only use half of the gym.
Not only did Hurricane Ike destroy their gym, but the junior high gym was damaged as well, so it is now being shared with these students.
The gym will eventually be repaired but there is no certain date as to when it will be ready; however, estimates say it could take 2-5 weeks. If it is the five weeks, that may be their entire season.
“Our seniors are taking it the hardest because it is their last year and they will not be able to have any home games in district especially homecoming,” Coach Trevino said.
Despite dealing with the catastrophe, the Lady Pirates must go on and capitalize for their talented team with the spectacular back row defensive specialist senior Jodie Chreene.
“Things are chaotic, but we are making the most of it,” Coach Trevino said.
The Lady Pirates also added depth to their team as they acquired a transfer student from Tarkington named Chancly Gamez, who has made an impact and worked her way as a starter.
The Lady Pirates’ victory last Thursday was a win, but it was not impressive because these girls have the capability to do more than just win.
Coach Trevino tried to motivate her team by being enthusiastic and laughing to encourage them to have fun. Overall, her tactic worked as they defeated the Lady Indians in three games giving them their first district game loss.
On the following night, the Lady Pirates had to prepare for the dominate Lady Longhorns and Coach Denise Johnson, a team that came into the game with a 2-0 record in district, beating Splendora the night before.
Coach Trevino and the Lady Pirates knew it would be a tough match-up against the Lady Longhorns. Both teams competed ferociously, but the Lady ‘Horns won, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-17.
Although the scores seem one-sided with the Lady Longhorns dominating, as a spectator, it was a sight to see how Jodie Chreene and Jordan Galloway, two of the best defensive specialists in the district, compete.
The loss for the Lady Pirates puts them at 1-2 in district.
Even their opposition had words of praise for the Shepherd girls. “Shepherd has really improved tremendously and Coach Trevino obviously is doing a good job over there,” said Tarkington’s Coach Johnson.
The Lady Pirates played Tuesday against one of the district’s best teams, Liberty, but due to the delivery of the paper, the results will be in next week’s issue.
The Lady Pirates are making up games that they missed due to the hurricane as they play Wednesday against Splendora and Friday at Coldspring.
