Willis approves using billboards for Vietnam memorial

A traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. is coming to Willis, and city officials want to spread the word to make the event a success.

The Willis Community Development Corporation on Tuesday approved the use of three billboards leased by the city to advertise the wall, a three-quarter scale replica, as a way to stimulate interest in Montgomery County and surrounding areas.

The billboards, located by the Conroe Outlets shopping center at Interstate 45 and League Line Road, at FM 1097 and Interstate 45, and at I-45 and Longstreet Road, currently advertise the city and will be used to promote the memorial’s visit Oct. 24-26.

“We have these billboards to advertise the city, but for now, they’re going to use some of the money given by the city council to advertise the memorial coming to the city,” board member Sharon Luster said. “We’re taking steps to make the event a success and reach out.”

The CDC was leasing the billboard at I-45 and League Line Road for $750 per month, but the board voted Tuesday not to renew its lease because of a $200 per month increase.

During a special meeting Aug. 28, the Willis City Council unanimously approved giving $20,000 from the local hotel occupancy-tax fund to help promote the traveling memorial.

Jeff Cashner of Cashner Funeral Home and Danny Blanchard of Metcalf Funeral Directors are sponsoring and organizing the event with the help of the American Legion Hall in Willis.

The wall will honor and pay a debt of gratitude to veterans living in the greater Houston area, said Anna Ross, who is secretary of the CDC.

“This is like a kickoff for the wall. You put the signs up and get people talking about it,” she said. “I’ve been to the wall in Washington, D.C., and this will be a great thing for veterans in Willis and surrounding towns.

“We want to honor these men and women who died for us and thank them.”

The traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall will be on display Oct. 24 through 26 at Roark School, 605 N. Campbell in Willis.

For more information about the display, call (936) 756-3311 or (936) 756-2126.

Citizen of the month: The Willis Community Development Corporation recognized Kenneth Lewis as the citizen of the month for September and Bob Moore as the citizen of the month for October.

" I can't wait to see the memorial and its a great idea to advertise to bring awareness to some of the real heros of this country. "

" I've not see the real thing nor have I seen one of these traveling walls - I'm looking forward to visiting Willis for this one.

(not sure about the billboard thing - since they're already in place guess they might as well be used for this - but, I'm against ALL billboards - eyesores, every one (isn't that why we've got the Yellow Pages ?) "

" billboards can be eyesores - there is one on 45 right after 1485 heading south on the left advertising storage with a woman's overstuffed top in a bikini. If we have an accident over oogling that sign is it enough to file a lawsuit against the company? "

You absolutely do need to see this memorial when it comes. I was there when they brought it to Huntsville and it's an incredibly sobering and moving experience. "
