The Lone Star College System
Lone Star College System students may now access a frequently asked questions site to help with issues and information requests in the wake of Hurricane Ike.
Questions regarding campus hours, access to computer labs, dual credit courses, crisis counseling, payment plan extensions, course make-ups, childcare facilities, tuition vouchers, volunteer opportunities and more are available at online.lonestar.edu/148684/.
The Greater Texas Foundation recently awarded Lone Star College Foundation a $100,000 grant that will allow Lone Star College System to provide 25 additional scholarships during the 2008-09 academic year while using the remaining $75,000 to create five new endowments which will provide an additional five scholarships at $1,000 each in the following years.
Darcy Mingoia was recently named the executive director for the Lone Star College Foundation. Mingoia joined the LSC Foundation in her new position Sept. 16.
The 15th annual Lone Star College Foundation Golf Tournament is Oct. 27 at The Woodlands Country Club Palmer Course.
The Florida Scramble-style tournament will begin with registration and lunch courtesy of Abby’s Catering at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at noon. Hole-in-one prizes, hole contests and door prizes will be featured throughout the tournament. An awards ceremony and dinner will round out the day at 6 p.m.

The Lone Star College System Small Business Development Center received an outstanding response to the call for nominations for the SBDC Business of the Year Awards.
The LSCS SBDC first requested nominations in June and received more than 130 applicants for the prestigious award.
The 15 finalists will be recognized with a special luncheon Oct. 30. Award recipients will be announced at the 22nd Annual Small Business Awards Banquet on Nov. 20. Both events will be hosted at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott.
Individual tickets are $50 and tables for 10 people are $500. A variety of sponsorship opportunities with recognition levels are available ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Reservations and sponsorships are now being accepted for the awards banquet through the Small Business Development Center at (832) 813-6674 or by visiting sbdc.lonestar.edu/.
Lone Star College-Montgomery
The 10th annual Lone Star College-Montgomery Film Series began in September.
The series, put together and co-hosted by LSC-Montgomery professor of government Gary Brown and professor of sociology Jared Cootz, is loosely modeled after the critically-acclaimed Rice Film Series. All showings are free of charge.
The 2008-09 lineup includes: Saturday and Monday, “Paris Je ‘Taime,” French; Oct. 11 and 13, “Sicko,” USA documentary; Oct. 18 and 20, “La Vie En Rose,” French; Oct. 25 and 27, “Away from Her,” USA; Nov. 1 and 3, “Amelie,” French; Nov. 8 and 10, “Run Lola Run,” Germany; Jan. 24 and 26, “The Decalogue” (“Ten Commandments”) parts 1-2, Polish; Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, “The Decalogue” parts 3-4; Feb. 7 and 9, “The Decalogue” parts 5-6; Feb. 14 and 16, “The Decalogue” parts 7-8; Feb. 21 and 23, “The Decalogue” parts 9-10; Feb. 28 and March 2, “Autumn Tale,” French; and March 7 and 9, “Harold and Maude,” USA.
All films are shown twice. The first date listed is the 7 p.m. Saturday showing and the second date listed is the 1 p.m. Monday showing. All films except the Nov. 1 and 8 dates will be shown in Room B102 on the LSC-Montgomery campus. On Nov. 1 and 8, the film series will move to the college’s theatre in Building D.

Rex Koontz will present a lecture titled, “America's Mediterranean: The Importance of the Mexican Gulf Coast in Ancient American Civilization” as part of the Lyceum Speaker Series at Lone Star College-Montgomery at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 in room B102. There will be a “meet and greet” event with Koontz beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Free flu shots are available from 9 to 11 a.m., or supplies run out, Oct. 11 at a drive-through flu shot clinic at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Only 300 shots will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
LSC-Montgomery will team up with The University of Texas Medical Branch’s Montgomery County Health Department to provide the free shots.

Students and community members searching for a direction in college can check out the Exploring Majors Fair at Lone Star College-Montgomery, Oct. 15 and 16.
The two-day event, sponsored by Student Services at LSC-Montgomery, is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons (Building A) and features information on the academic majors students can select. It also provides a place where current and prospective students can speak with faculty members specializing in the different areas of study.
The Exploring Majors Fair is one event in a weeklong “College Survival Week” at LSC-Montgomery. Student Services will have several events the week of Oct. 13-17. The week kicks off with a “Plan Your Trip” event from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the office of student services, where current and prospective students will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with advisors to help plan their academic careers.
Other events during the week include a “College Survival 101” session from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 14 in Building B, Room 102; a “Transfer 101” session from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Building E advising lobby; a “How Can I Help You” session (about the many student services provided at LSC-Montgomery) from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Blue Star Café (Building C); and a session on “Building Bridges” (about the resources found in the office of career services) from 10:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 in Building E, Room 111.

Lone Star College-Montgomery’s theatre department has set new dates for its production of “Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)” by Ann-Marie MacDonald. The dates and times for the show are 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15 (a free preview for the college and general public); 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 to 18 and 2 p.m. Oct. 18. All performances will be in the Mainstage Theatre (Building D) on the LSC-Montgomery campus.
Ticket prices are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors and $5 for faculty, staff and students. Tickets can be purchased online at Montgomery.LoneStar.edu/theatre to support the theatre scholarship fund.

Lone Star College-Montgomery will offer Safety First! from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Commons (Building A). Attendees will learn about steps they can take to lower their risk of accidents and to prevent personal injuries – including those situations that arise from weather conditions such as the recent hurricane that severely impacted the area. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
Knitters from Lone Star College-Montgomery will hold a Knit-In from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at Lone Star College-Montgomery in building A (second floor Commons) to support the Family Time Crisis and Counseling Shelter: The Door in Humble. The group will also collect knitting supplies for the women and children of the shelter. Knitting needles, scissors, yarn, measuring tapes and tote bags are needed for these beginning knitters. Volunteers will take the donated supplies and knitted pieces to the shelter.
The Door is a temporary safe haven for victims of violence, which also offers services to assist in ending the cycle of violence located at 101 Main Street in Humble.

The Leadership Institute’s Lunch Series at Lone Star College-Montgomery has been canceled except for the re-scheduling of the initial session. This session, originally scheduled for Sept. 17, has been moved to 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in Room B102 at LSC-Montgomery. “Non-Verbal Cultural Differences” features Jan Hargrave, a leading authority in the field of nonverbal communication.
