Episcopal girls take aim at SPC cross country title

The Episcopal girls' cross country team is trying to take the SPC title this season.

The Episcopal High School girls cross country team is setting its sights on a possible Southwest Preparatory Conference championship.

“We’ve got to think that way,” said head coach Dick Phillips of a squad that placed third last year in the SPC and returns its main players this fall. “When you’ve performed like we did last year and you have everyone back from that team, you’ve got to make that your goal.”

And he believes the team will be right there, providing it can get past the stumbling block that is usually Kinkaid.

“Kinkaid has been very, very good for a long time now,” he said. “They’re usually the best SPC team around. But we were able to finally get past them last year and I’m hoping the girls know that, if we run like we’re capable, then we can run with a lot of great teams.”

The Knights are still young this year with just one senior among the first dozen runners.

“This is just a young team that happens to be a very talented group of runners,” said Phillips. “There’s not a better combination for a team to be. And this group works hard, so that’s another plus. I really think the sky’s limit on what we can possibly achieve.”

Junior Sarah Yates, who was the team’s top runner as a sophomore, is back again as its number one. Juniors Taylor Buckner and Alex Perouty rotate between the number two and number three spots, depending on who’s hot at anytime, said Phillips.

Senior Becky Bereswill and her sister, sophomore Allison Bereswill are numbers four and five, but currently not available because they are international figure skaters.

“We don’t know when we’ll have them back, but they’re both outstanding runners,” said Phillips. “And pretty good skaters, too.”

Junior Brittany Hildebrand and sophomore Kali Pereira round out the top seven, but sophomores Lauren Hollins, Caroline Martin and Kimberly Khourie and juniors Taylor Tavormina and Amy Brlansky are all contending to be among the 10 runners that can race in the SPC girls race.

“We do have some depth,” said Phillips. “This group does really push each other. That’s another reason I think they’ve done as well as they have.”

He said the Knights were able to gather last week to get in some work despite no school and electricity due to Hurricane Ike.

“We were able to run a little bit on the baseball warning track,” said Phillips. “We had to dodge a few trees, but our kids really had a few good workouts I thought.”

The Knights have run in two races and are scheduled to be at Houston Christian at 8 a.m. Saturday.

“We’re hoping to pick up right where we were,” said Phillips. “We expect to just resume what we feel like has a chance to be a very good season.”
