International Festival of Fort Bend to aid Hurricane Ike victims

Hurricane Ike victims will get a helping hand at the 2nd Annual International Festival of Fort Bend. During the festival, Second Mile Mission of Stafford will accept donations for hurricane victims at the event, scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m at the Stafford Centre, 10505 Cash Road.

The Mission is in urgent need of donations of laundry detergent, personal care items and food such as dried beans. Other needed items include dishes, pots, pans, sheets, pillowcases and coffee pots.

Coordinators of the International Festival will also unveil a new stamp, entitled “The Latin Jazz Stamp” from the United States Postal Service, featuring a design by San Francisco-based artist Michael Bartalos.

The stamp, depicts three musicians playing bass, piano and conga drums, and seeks to capture the upbeat, energetic, and romantic spirit that characterizes much of Latin jazz.


Dozens of nationalities will be represented at this year’s International Festival.

The event, which is free to the public, will feature a range of cultural performances, dancing, foods from around the world, entertainment, arts and crafts exhibits, children's attractions and a multicultural parade.

A new feature this year is the "Night of Asia", a ticketed event that begins at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule of events of the festival include:

11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Festival Doors open with Children’s Activities, Vendor Hall and Ethnic Food Area

•11 a.m. -11:20 a.m. Pre-show Performances by Mariachi Juvenile and 2008 Sugar Land Super Star

•11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Opening Ceremonies – Remarks by Fort Bend County mayors, National Anthem, posting of colors. international parade of cultures

•1– 6 p.m. Cultural Performances

•7:30 p.m. Night of Asia (tickets are required)
