Four teams thriving in hurry-up schedule
By ROBERT AVERY
Monday night represented the halfway mark to the District 22-5A volleyball teams playing their revised, hurry-up schedule.
And the teams that are so far surviving this district race at warp speed are Memorial, Pearland, Deer Park and Dobie.
They’ve established themselves as the frontrunners after the teams played four matches in six days. Pearland has grabbed sole possession of first place courtesy of its big 3-0 victory over Deer Park Monday night in a showdown of unbeaten clubs. Pearland won 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.
Deer Park dropped into a big tie for second place with Memorial and Dobie. The three are all 3-1. Memorial won its third consecutive match Monday night by dispatching rival South Houston on the Mavericks floor in straight sets. Since losing to Pearland last Wednesday, Memorial hasn’t lost a single game.
In surprising fashion, the team swept by Dobie on Saturday, defeated La Porte on Friday and now swept past the Lady Trojans.
The district race continues its adjusted schedule tonight. The matches today are the ones that Hurricane Ike affected on Sept. 16.
Memorial will attempt to add to its three-match winning streak when it travels to 0-4 Pasadena. But the Lady Eagles are a little bit on the pesky side this season. Dobie will attest to that after Pasadena had Dobie tied in games at 1-1 last Friday, before losing 3-1.
South Houston will pay Dobie a visit as the Lady Trojans have yet to win a game much less a match. But they’ve also had the toughest road to travel, facing Pearland, Deer Park and Memorial this past Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Sam Rayburn has the task of trying to cool off Pearland with a match on its home floor. Rayburn has dropped three straight after opening with a win against South Houston. The squad dropped a heartbreaker to La Porte on Saturday, falling 3-2. Game five saw the Lady Bulldogs eke out an 18-16 decision.
In perhaps the biggest match today, Deer Park and La Porte tangle. La Porte can catch Deer Park in the standings with a win, while the Lady Deer can put some distance on its rivals with a victory, while remaining in a tie for second place.
After tonight, the teams still have two more matches this week, before the district race calms down and resumes its typical Tuesday-Friday schedule starting next week.
