Comeback lifts College Park going into district play
By MIKE TAYLOR
Something had to change after College Park lost the first two games of its match against visiting Katy Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers, ranked No. 16 in this week’s Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, seized an early advantage with a 25-20 win in the first game and put a stranglehold on the match with another 25-20 win in the second.
Somehow, the Lady Cavaliers escaped.
They won a tense third game, staving off one match point, dominated the fourth game and finished off the team’s 22nd win in a raucous fifth game.
“We made some adjustments and the girls that came in did outstanding,” College Park coach Candice Collins said. “I was extremely proud of all of them.”
College Park began its comeback with a run of six straight points in the third game, which gave the Lady Cavs a 14-8 lead. Katy would tie the score at 19, leading to a furious finish.
College Park (22-5) squandered a 24-23 lead, and two Katy kills gave the Lady Tigers a match point. But a Lexi Erwin kill followed by an Alissa Blevins ace gave the Lady Cavs another chance. Audrey Zatopek sealed the win with a kill.
“In the third game we stepped up our intensity and basically we chose to win,” Collins said.
College Park led by as many as 10 points in the fourth game, forcing the fifth and deciding game with a 25-16 win.
The Lady Cavs trailed by two points early in the final game, but took a 6-5 lead and opened that advantage to 12-7 before holding off Katy (22-8) for a 20-25, 20-25, 27-25, 25-16, 15-12 victory.
“This was a huge win for us,” Collins said. “It was really nice for us to beat them after they beat us at their place twice in the Katy Tournament.
“It showed a lot of heart and dedication losing those first two and coming back.”
College Park plays at The Woodlands Friday at 4:30 p.m. in each team’s district opener.
Oak Ridge wins
Alyssa Short, Lauren Brown and Marissa Wixson combined for 26 kills and Brooke Sheranko recorded 32 assists as the Lady War Eagles prepped for District 14-5A play with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 triumph at Katy Morton Ranch Tuesday.
Short had 12 kills, while Brown and Wixson added seven apiece.
“I was real proud of the way they competed,” Oak Ridge coach Janet Tingle said. “After 10 days of not playing or practicing, they played a really nice game.”
Tingle said all three aspects of the Lady War Eagles’ game — offense, defense and serve-receive — were in good shape.
Oak Ridge (15-7) opens district at Conroe at 6 p.m. Friday.
