Some national forests closed to bow hunters, campers

Tomball and Magnolia area residents looking to do a little camping or bow hunting may have to postpone those plans thanks to Hurricane Ike.
The Category 2 storm which hit South Texas Sept. 13 has forced the U.S. Forest Service to close some areas, according to a press statement issued Sept. 20 by Ernie Murray, a
public affairs specialist with the
National Forests & Grasslands in Texas program.
Murray provided the following updates:
The Angelina National Forest is open although some recreation areas remain closed. Sandy Creek Recreation Area and Bouton Lake Recreation Area will open Monday, Sept. 22. All other recreation areas remain closed.
The Sabine National Forest is open with the exception of Red Hills Recreation Area and Boles Field.
Davy Crockett National Forest remains closed to the public and the opening of bow hunting season will be postponed, according to Ranger JR Lawrence. Crews are working to open roads in Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area as well as roads to hunter camps. A public meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Davy Crockett Ranger Office to review maps of damaged areas and to discuss recovery and restoration of the areas.
Sam Houston National Forest recreation areas as well as the general forest remains closed to the public. Crews are working to open roads to recreation areas and to hunter camps.
