Youth soccer sign-up in final week

The city’s Parks & Recreation department is in the final week of registering children for its fall soccer season.

The league is open to children ages 5-13 as of Sept. 1, 2008. All games will be played at the Deepwater soccer fields (503 Parkwood), starting on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Teams will compete in the following divisions: 5 & 6-year-olds, 7 & 8-year-olds, 9 & 10-year-olds and 11-to-13 year-olds. All teams advance to the city playoffs.


The entry fee is $40 for residents of the city and $45 for non-residents. The deadline for families to register their child is Oct. 3

Golf tourney postponed by Ike

The annual Memorial Maverick High School Golf Tournament that benefits the girls and boys golf programs that was scheduled for Oct. 4 at Baywood Country Club has been postponed Memorial coach Mark Boyd has announced.

The postponement is due to Hurricane Ike and its aftermath.

Boyd is looking at early March to reschedule the tournament. Details of when and where the tournament will be played will be announced at a later date.

Homecoming games reset due to storm

Due to Hurricane Ike and the two weeks the school district missed because of the storm’s aftermath, the Pasadena Independent School District has announced new dates for its homecoming football games.

Only Memorial and South Houston have kept their original dates. Memorial’s will be on Friday, Oct. 10 and South Houston’s will fall on Oct. 9.

Dobie’s has moved its homecoming from Oct. 2 to Oct. 23, Pasadena will move theirs from Oct. 3 to Oct. 17 and Sam Rayburn has changed its homecoming from Oct. 4 to 16.

Benefit softball game set for Oct. 7

The 6th annual Guns and Nozzles Softball Game between the South Houston police department and fire department will be held Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Senior ballfields, located at the Avenue J and 9th Street.

The action will be part of the town’s National Night Out festivities. Free hot dogs and drinks will be available.
