Barks 5th Avenue open to receive pets for boarding after Hurricane Ike

Pennie Mahon is well aware of the stress residents are under now that Ike has come and gone.

“People are displaced, they’re trying to get their homes back together, trying to get their lives back together, and this is one way we can help,” she said.

Mahon is the owner of Barks 5th Avenue, a local establishment where residents board their pets.

“I want everyone to know that we are fully operational and are here to help pet owners by taking in dogs and cats while they make repairs to their homes,” she said. “If people are missing fences, have additional family or friends in their homes while the city recovers, we want them to know we can help by taking their animals and caring for them at this time.”

Mahon and members of her staff have been on hand ‘round the clock to accept pets into their care while homeowners try to reorganize their lives.

“Now that phone calls are slowing down, we’ll be here from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., but I’m giving out my personal cell phone number in case someone has an emergency situation and needs to get their pet into our hands before or after business hours,” she said. “I can meet them here at the (shop) if they need me to.”

Mahon explained that she’s aware many people are turning to hotels while their power is out, and that many hotels aren’t accepting pets.

The Northwest Houston facility successfully weathered the storm caring for more than 60 pets and has power and water fully restored. Staff remained on-hand throughout the storm to supervise conditions and monitor all pets in their care. Staff will remain on-site around the clock throughout the week in order to receive additional pets and care for the animals boarded at the facility.

Another thing Mahon said residents may want to check on is the possibility of insurance covering the board.

“It doesn’t happen in all cases, but sometimes when people are displaced because of a storm, insurance will cover the cost of having their pets boarded,” she explained.

On top of having the stress of wondering what to do with your pet during this difficult time removed, Mahon said that the weather is great and the dogs and cats will actually get a break from the stress of being uprooted from their normal lifestyle as well.

“We have an 8,500-square-foot facility where they’ll get to run and play with other dogs all day,” she said.

In order to have a pet boarded at Barks 5th Avenue, the pet mustbe current on all of its vaccinations, and Mahon said they will be flexible in case a family vet can’t be reached immediately. Also, Mahon has a veterinarian on hand to administer shots in case an animal is in need of them.

Pet owners looking for a location to board pets or have pets groomed are encouraged to contact the shop at 281-970-2284 or Ms. Mahon via cell phone or text message at 832-443-6780.

Barks 5th Avenue is located at 10620 FM 1960 West at the intersection of Jones Road. The facility is a full-service boarding and grooming. For more information, please visit www.barksfifthave.com.
