Food stamp offices open this weekend

Updated: 09.20.08
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is keeping food stamp offices open this weekend across Southeast and Central Texas to help hurricane victims apply for help.

Low-income families in disaster areas may be eligible for up to two months of emergency food stamp benefits if they meet income and asset requirements. A family of four earning up to $2,915 this month may qualify for assistance.

Applicants also will have to answer questions about their bank account balances, household and expenses. People who provide additional documentation may qualify for benefits for a longer period.

Hurricane victims also may pick up and drop off applications at Abundant Life Cathedral, 11230 Harwin Drive in Houston. HHSC staff will be available to answer questions and take applications from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

HHSC offices that are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday include:

• Houston: 2110 Telephone Road

• Houston: 12121 Westheimer

• Bay City: 2010 Avenue K
