Dayton powered ahead of expectations

By MIKE GEORGE
Updated: 09.18.08
As this edition of the Dayton News was being prepared to go to press, word arrived that Dayton was getting power far sooner than anyone expected after the devastation that was Hurricane Ike.

“This is far sooner than any of my expectations,” said Dan Syphrett of Entergy. “No way did I think we’d have power in Dayton as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

The Entergy representative spoke about who had power and who was expected to have power by day’s end.

“Right now, City Hall, the Police and Fire Stations, Brookshire Bros., Conoco, Shell, Jack in the Box, Little Caesar’s, the Medical Clinic and the Post Office have power,” stated Syphrett. “In short order, and by that I mean relatively soon we expect to have Thrif-Tee Food Center, McDonald’s, Burger King, and Walgreen powered and ready to go. Generally speaking, by day’s end we hope to see the main corridor of Dayton, US 90 between Hwy 146 and the drop-off with power. There might be others but right now we’ll just call that the gravy.”

The restoration of power has been due to some diligent and hard work by hundreds of workers and volunteers in the area who have worked to clear tree limbs from wires, put in new poles and repair the lines.

There was also a warning at the time given by Syphrett.

“Every thing is contingent upon how much load is available to bring into Dayton,” warned Syphrette. “But in my gut, I think we’re going to be fine. It’s nothing that can be guaranteed, but I feel every thing is going to work out fine.”
