Major airports close; Hooks remains open
By ANNA SCHUMANN
Despite the closures of major Houston airports, David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport near Tomball will remain open during Hurricane Ike barring serious emergency.
According to a story posted on www.abc13.com, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is to close at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 and William P. Hobby Airport is to close at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Bridget Velasquez, a customer service representative for the main terminal of Hooks, said the airport is open 24 hours as always, though business may not be as usual.
She said their control tower will close at noon Friday, but operators will remain at the airport in case of any emergency landings.
The airport has taken precautionary measures, she said, by boarding up the windows yesterday. She said they are out of hangar space as well.
Velasquez said traffic had been slow at the airport today and she thinks most people who normally fly into or out of the airport have left.
“Once it closes, people fly in and out at their own risk,” she said. “And if something detrimental happens, we will definitely close.”
