North county residents move on as power is restored

Residents of North Montgomery County have seen a sizeable increase in homes with power in the last 24 hours, enabling them to begin recovering from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Ike.

On Sunday, residents could be seen piling debris, mowing lawns and visiting with neighbors throughout Willis and Panorama Village, looking beyond the aftermath of the storm and focusing on life after Ike.

“Everyone’s been working hard to get things back to normal. The neighborhood has been real supportive of each other,” Two Shores resident Leslie Slaughter said. “In our daily lives before the storm we came and went, but we all pitched in and the community came together to support everyone.”

Slaughter said neighborhood cookouts and conversations were commonplace in days after the storm, with residents assisting their neighbors in recovery efforts.

Residents in Lake Conroe-area subdivisions said power had been restored to their homes Thursday, but power generators echoing through the neighborhood could be still be heard from homes nearby.

Sam Houston Electric Cooperative, which serves much of North County, had 85.6 percent of its customers – or 8,062 meters – up and running by Sunday afternoon in northern Montgomery County, officials said.

That was a sizeable jump over Saturday, when 50 percent of the meters in Sam Houston Electric Cooperative’s area in the county were operational.

Residents in rural northeastern areas of the county received power to their homes Sunday morning as well as trash pickups for the first time since the storm’s rampage Sept. 13

Guy Decote, who was mowing his lawn and collecting debris Sunday, said he and his neighbors are working to put Hurricane Ike behind them.

“I’m just cleaning up and getting things back to normal. I had to clean some things up in my yard,” he said. “Everyone’s been doing what they can to get the power back on and we’re ready to move on here.”

Similar scenes could be seen in Panorama Village, which received power Thursday afternoon, before losing it again for approximately 24 hours on Friday. Power was finally restored again in the early hours of Saturday morning, residents said.

Debris was chopped and piled high along roads in the north Montgomery County city, with many trees uprooted and broken in residents’ lawns.

Other Montgomery County residents also have seen improvements in getting power up and running.

The city of Conroe is operating at nearly 97 percent of the 58,000 customers who were affected by power outages, according to Renee Powers, Entergy Texas customer service manager for the Conroe area.

Mid South Synergy officials said the company is operating at nearly 100 percent of its 6,000 meters in west Conroe and Montgomery areas, treating homes without power as “trouble cases,” officials said.

Representatives for CenterPoint Entergy could not be reached before press time Sunday, but the company’s website projects areas hit in The Woodlands to be out of power until at least Thursday.

Only 30 percent of the company’s 40,000 residents in the county had power Saturday.
