Citizens cautioned about donating to bogus Ike recovery web sites

Updated: 09.20.08
Fort Bend County and the State of Texas Department of Information is warning residents of fraudulent fundraising that could be going on via the Internet in the wake of Hurricane season.

Prior to the hit of Hurricane Ike and Gustav, several domain names were registered that the state is considering bogus.

A list of these web site can be found at http://www.fortbendgov.com.

The list was developed from a list of known fraudulent domain names that were registered before and after Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana. Many domain names have not been registered yet, but based on prior experience the listed domains, along with many others, will be registered and used for the sole purpose of committing fraud related to a hurricane or other natural disaster.

The list is not all-inclusive and does not encompass all current or future domain names that may be used for fraudulent activities. The list only contains information about domain names possibilities using the most common URL extensions. Many of the domain names listed are already registered using foreign country name extensions. These foreign country name extensions can also be filtered out in most email systems and clients.

Those wishing to make donations can go to reliable sources, like local non-profits and reputable groups.  Always research the group before making a donation.
