Bayshore Medical Center prepares for storm

Bayshore Medical Center was taking precautions Thursday in anticipation of an indefinite emergency lockdown which was to begin at 9 p.m. that evening as soon as visiting hours ended.

“After that, all visitors will be required to leave the premises and that would include the patients’ family members,” said Consuelo Esnaola, Bayshore spokesperson.

Only certain employees, referred to as E1, will be able to re-enter the facility for shift work, said Esnaola.

Surgical appointments had cancelled as of noon on Thursday and the emergency lockdown would stay in effect until the storm passed.


“At this point, we’re kind of on a wait-and-see to see if there’s any flooding in the area so our employees can reach the facility,” said Esnaola.

The medical center was ensuring that the nursing, specialists and other medical personnel was fully prepared to care for patients at the facility during the lockdown and the facility itself was prepared with back-up generators.

“We are prepared for every emergency,” said Esnaola.

The emergency room was open as of Thursday and would remain prepared to accommodate if necessary, said Esnaola.

Bayshore Medical Center is not a public shelter and will not be able to accommodate any family members only significant others. In the event an evacuation of Bayshore Medical Center is considered necessary a media advisory will be provided.

In order to consolidate resources and for patient safety purposes in preparation of Hurricane Ike, HCA Gulf Coast Division announced the closing of the following satellite emergency center in Pasadena: ? Fairmont Emergency Center at 6002 Fairmont Parkway. The order became effective at 7 p.m. Thursday.

This satellite emergency center will re-open as soon as feasible after the storm has passed.

Patients in need of medical care and treatment will be directed to Bayshore Medical Center’s Emergency Department located at 4000 Spencer Highway in Pasadena or any other medical facility in the area.
