No major problems in Humble, city to pick up debris

OBSERVER STAFF REPORTS

Hurricane Ike's impact on the Humble area was relegated to down trees and minor street flooding but no major injuries or deaths, according to the city of Humble's office of emergency management.

"I think everything is pretty secure," said Carole Chambers, emergency management assistant coordinator for the city of Humble. "We got pretty lucky."

Chambers said on Sunday afternoon that a few places in Humble said had no power and that the only real threats of flooding came when the rain from Ike came down the hardest.

The city's emergency management office has a list of people who have special needs or medical issues and keep in close contact with them before, throughout and after the storm, Chambers said.

The city is now shifting into recovery mode now, she said, with more police officers patrolling the area and debris pick up.

Chambers explained that residents should put their down tree limbs on the side of the road so that the city can come by and get them. No date for pick up has been set but the city has contracted the service out.

The city's emergency management office will have to fill out paperwork for FEMA. Chambers said they do a rapid assessment of debris and damage by going down each street in the city and then perform a more exhaustive report in the coming weeks.

FEMA requests the reports as reference once storm related claims come in to the federal agency.

Chambers said that anyone in the area with storm related damage should take a photo to provide for their insurance company.
