Flood water poses problems in EMC

Updated: 09.17.08
OBSERVER STAFF REPORTS

Hurricane Ike wasn't kind to the residents of East Montgomery County, despite its northern location. The lack of adequate drainage led to widespread flooding as residents were still dealing with standing water in streets, businesses and homes. East Montgomery County had substantial flooding as of the afternoon of Sep. 14.

New Caney and Porter both had street lights that were not functioning and created huge traffic jams as drivers negotiated four-way stops. Sheriff's deputies were trying to alleviate the problem by directing traffic, but the large number of streets and lack of manpower hindered the operation.

There was a point of distribution located at the recycling center just off FM 1485 east of Highway 59 handing out ice and water to residents in need. Workers for Montgomery County District 4 were distributing the supplies to vehicles, loading cases of bottled water and ice into car trunks and truck beds, then trying to shuttle them off in a quick, orderly fashion. Even with the volunteers working diligently, there were two lines of cars that streched for over a mile.

Across the highway, residents were waiting, gas cans in hand, for gas stations to turn on their pumps. Throughout the county, gas stations without power were seeking out generators to try and supply locals with gasoline for their cars and generators. Residents lined up at the Exxon at FM 1485 and U.S. Highway 59 waiting for pumps to flow. A sea of red gas cans lined the perimeter of the parking lot as residents started to become impatient.
