Courage honored by survivor award event
The Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation will present Helen Michael, an agent with Coldwell Banker United Realtors, with the Nancy Owens Spirit of Courage Award.
Each year, the award recognizes the courage of an extraordinary individual in the real estate industry who has fought the battle against cancer and won.
At the luncheon award ceremony Tuesday at the Westin Galleria, 5060 West Alabama St., the guest speaker is Marcia Wallace (“The Bob Newhart Show”), who is a 20-year breast cancer survivor.
A major event, more than 900 guests are expected to attend. Funds raised will be split between the Houston affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization and the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine.
Michael’s real estate career began more than 20 years ago, and it was during a Realtor-sponsored cancer screening event in 1990 that her cancer was detected by mammogram. Within a week of diagnosis, she underwent surgery, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy.
Michael quickly realized that she would not let cancer define her.
She coped by separating herself from the cancer and dealing with it, just like any other job.
Her catch phrase is “Simply Awesome,” which is the way she views and lives her life. Michael is involved with St. Cecilia’s School, the school her children attended and grandchildren now attend. She is also a member of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women and is a past volunteer with CanCare.
The Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation was created in memory of Nancy Owens, a respected member of the Houston real estate industry. She died in 2001 after a 20-year battle with breast cancer. She had hoped to dedicate her life to supporting breast cancer research. The foundation bearing her name does just that. Since its inception in 2002, it has raised nearly $650,000 toward the cause.
