Conditions have improved at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter on Texas 242 since Hurricane Ike blew through, but nearly 200 animals will be euthanized Saturday if they don’t find homes Friday, an official said.
“We normally euthanize on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but we haven’t been able to because of the hurricane,” Supervisor LaJean Thompson said. “Our volunteers are trying to save all the animals.”
Thompson said 117 dogs and 53 cats are scheduled to be euthanized Saturday unless people come today to adopt or foster them.
People who foster animals can decide later to adopt them.
“They need to come down and take them home,” Thompson said. “They can’t adopt without the animal being spayed or neutered, so we’re asking people to fill out foster forms and we’ll schedule a neuter or spay at a later date.”
The only charge to adopt an animal from the shelter is the spay or neuter charge, which is $40 to neuter and $60 to spay, according to Thompson.
In addition, all adopted animals must be up to date on shots and are microchipped, Thompson said.
For two days after Ike hit, the shelter was in complete darkness and had no water, making life miserable for the 180 dogs and 91 cats currently housed there.
“It’s been so bad. It was pitch black, because we have no windows, and the two employees and I were having to haul in water. It was like a mine in here,” Thompson said. “We were miserable and the dogs were miserable.”
Now, about 20 volunteers have shown up to help, the power - including air conditioning - and water are back on and life is better.
“The volunteers came through,” she said. “The people have been great. They’ve donated lots of food.”

" Not sure why the shelter would take in another 200 animals from other counties if they can't handle what the have today. So, now 200 animals will be euthanized. What did that get them besides a story? That place needs new leadership so the animals have a real 2nd chance. "

" i think its pretty disgusting and troubling news about euthanizing many, many HEALTHY dogs and cats, giving people a days notice.....what gives these indiviuals a right to do this....easy way out....obviously not one of their or their loved one pets.....surely there has to be another alternative....what about transfering these poor animals to other facilities that could provide a safe and loving shelter until they find good homes.....having public adoptions...with good notice so our citizens are aware....not this quick and senseless SOLUTION....to their PROBLEM...I have myself tried since I heard of the story last evening to get through to the shelter to no avail.....to make a donation,etc....City officials shame on you
for allowing this to happen...without turning to other options....PATHETIC>>>> "
