The Deer Park school board accepted a $66,917.08 donation from the Deer Park Education Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, which is separate from the school district.

Every year, the Deer Park Education Foundation funds mini-grants ranging from $300-$750 and innovative teaching grants ranging from $751-$2,500 to employees of the Deer Park Independent School District, according to a memo from Larry C. Johnson, the board chair of the foundation to the superintendent and the board of trustees.

This year, the foundation funded $9,476.58 for mini grants and $57,440.50 for innovative teaching grants –a total of $66,917.08, according to the memo.

Sheri Brown, coordinator for the Deer Park Education Foundation, said 48 grants were distributed to 71 teachers.

The foundation received applications for nearly $112,000 at total.

The non-profit organization aims to provide assistance for innovative teaching programs and other educational programs which would have not otherwise been funded. The grants from the foundation enable the teachers of DPISD to enhance their core curriculum.

The grant review committee consists of Deer Park Education Foundation board members, campus principals and several instructional specialists, the memo read.
