EHRMC and Bayshore Medical Center finalize merger

By MATT HOLLIS
Updated: 09.04.08
East Houston Regional Medical Center (EHRMC) and Bayshore Medical Center have finalized a merger that will allow both hospitals to operate under one license, a single blended medical staff and a single board of trustees.

“Most functions remain the same for both campuses such as our commitment to our respective communities, involvement in community outreach activities including h2u and volunteer services, educational programs, and medical services provided at each site,” said Jeff Holland, FACHE, chief executive officer for both facilities.

Holland, along with Chief Financial Officer John Armour, will work as administrative team members for both facilities.

“It’s like a college with two campuses,” said Jeanna Barnard, Bayshore Medical Center chief operating officer. “Two campuses make us stronger. The employees are looking forward to the merger.”

Being able to offer the greatest possible flexibility for a rapidly changing healthcare environment is the logic behind the merger. The communities surrounding the hospitals will not notice any changes, Barnard said.

“As someone who has worked in the North Channel area for 10 years, I am very familiar with the needs of the community,” Barnard said. “We are excited to offer new services to the area.”

With the merger, according to Barnard, EHRMC and Bayshore will now offer services not available before such as open-heart surgery, neurosurgery, in-patient pediatrics, in-patient rehabilitation care and a neonatal intensive care unit.

“The people of the North Channel community will still receive the same health care as always,” Barnard said. “There will be no changes in insurance requirements or in the medical staff. For the past 25 years, if the need for a higher level of care arised, patients were transferred to the Medical Center (in Houston) or another facility. Now they can receive the same level of care right in their own neighborhood.”

Both hospitals have collectively a total of 500 beds, more than 2,000 employees and more than 186,000 patients encounters each year.

“The administrative, medical and management teams at both hospitals are committed to work together to make this as smooth a transition as possible,” said Holland. “Merging Bayshore Medical Center with East Houston Regional Medical Center is not only the best way for both hospitals to be more efficient but also to ensure our long-run survival in this dynamic healthcare environment. We are excited to offer our communities with the best healthcare available so close to home on both sides of the Houston Ship Channel.”

EHRMC is an acute-care facility with the only Level IV Trauma Designated Emergency Center in all of East Harris County. The hospital has been accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and The Joint Commission, currently has 131 beds and over 550 employees. EHRMC offers many specialized services and has sections designed to fill needs such as The Center for Pain Care, the Industrial Medicine Program; rehabilitation services and the Diabetes Self-Management Program.

Bayshore Medical Center has been ranked by HealthGrades, a national independent quality ratings company, as the only Houston area hospital to be ranked among the top five percent in the nation five years in a row. This earned the hospital the HealthGrades® Distinguished Hospital Award for Overall Clinical Excellence. They are the only hospital in Pasadena fully accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and The Joint Commission. The Bayshore campus is a 369-bed acute-care facility that has been serving the needs of Southeast Harris County for 46 years. Bayshore’s wide range of services includes acute care of the medical and surgical patient and specialty services such as the Advanced Wound Care Center; Cardiovascular and Cardiology Services, including open heart; Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Inpatient Pediatric Unit; Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and award-winning Maternity Services.
