With hurricane Ike churning in the Gulf of Mexico, organizers of the 10th annual Jared Jamail Memorial Golf Tournament have decided to reschedule the event to later next month.

Though Ike is currently predicted to make landfall somewhere near the Corpus Christi or Matagorda Bay area late Friday, the National Hurricane Center is predicting potential sustained winds of 34 -50 and rain totals of 6 to 8 inches as far away as Baytown.

"There's no need in putting anyone in harm's way. If it were just a 20 or 30 percent chance of rain we'd go ahead, but with the threat of wind and tornadoes we're just not taking any chances," said tourament organizer Pam Johnson.

The tournament is currently scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Newport Golf Club.
